The lake at Silvaplana provides the main setting for most wind blown sports in the Upper Engadine. The Maloja, a thermal wind usually blows up each afternoon throughout the summer months. This wind is thought to be reliable enough for the lake to host an annual Kitesurf World Cup event in August. The Maloja can blow at between force 3 and force 5 on the Beaufort scale and is most reliable in August and September.
Like many resorts that experience a blow up in the afternoon, mornings tend to be calmer. These are ideal conditions for beginners to get out and practice the basics.
