Peebles, Walking & Hiking

The countryside surrounding Peebles offers a plethora of walks through a variety of landscapes. There are gentle riverside strolls, forest walks and more arduous rambles over rolling hills. In general the walking is never too strenuous for those of reasonable fitness and some of the easier routes could probably even be managed by the average Billy Bunter.

The Southern Upland Way one of Scotland’s most famous long distance walking routes passes through nearby Innerleithen on its 212 mile (341 kilometre) route from Portpatrick on the west coast to Cockburnspath on the east coast. As The Southern Upland Way is such a long route it has become popular practice to tackle shorter sections at a time. Some choose to tackle it over several weekends while others do half in one week and come back at a later date to complete the other half.

Some local companies provide guided and self guided walking tours throughout the area. Maps and information on some of the local walking routes can be obtained from the local tourist office.
