Braemar, Walking & Hiking

The mountains, forests and glens surrounding Braemar offer a tremendous variety of walks with trails suitable for families and experienced mountaineers alike. The list of documented walks in Braemar’s locale is impressive. Lochnagar and Ben MacDui are just two of the thirty or so Munro’s in the area and the Lairig Ghru is one of several longer distance routes beginning nearby. There are also many shorter loop walks that start and finish in the village itself.

From the car park at Glenshee Ski Centre just down the road several Munro’s can be reached tout-suite. This is because the car park is at a base elevation of 2132 feet. As such walkers unaccustomed to scaling Munro’s and consequently of limited endurance should easily make the summit.

Armed with a map, compass and guide book and maybe even a tent, most hikers should find themselves in seventh heaven. The Cairngorm’s cover a vast area of North East Scotland and Braemar is perfectly positioned right in their midst.
