Tiree, Surfing

Due to its’ relatively high average wind speeds, Tiree has long been a popular destination for windsurfers. Today they are joined by kitesurfers and surfers who also appreciate the islands enviable aquatic conditions. Several beaches around Tiree are known to produce good rideable waves when conditions are just right which occurs mostly when the North Atlantic swell is accompanied by winds from all directions bar those with a western component.

Like much of Western Scotland’s surf locations Tiree benefits mostly from its exposure to the Atlantic Ocean which is all there is between here and North America. Also because Tiree is relatively small and all of the surfing beaches are easily accessible it’s never too much trouble to find the best location on any particular day either. Unlike other destinations where changing location means a ten mile hike or driving for two hours cross country.

For any aspiring surfers or the already initiated trying to reach the next level in their surfing careers the good news is that Tiree boasts a surf school. As well as handling tuition the school also provides all the equipment required including wetsuits, all of which can be hired separately or bought from their shop.
