Val Thorens, Skiing & Sno...

At 2300 meters and boasting a glacier Val Thorens is the most snow sure resort in Les Trois Vallees and one of the most reliable for winter sports in all of Europe. The main ski season can run over seven months from late November to early May allowing adrenaline addicts an early respite from the off season famine. The glacier has also been known to open in July although with rising summer temperatures this is becoming a rare phenomenon. Here, you are high above the tree line so don’t expect any James Bond-esque descents through the woods. You need to head down the valley toward St Martin or into one of the other valleys for that experience. Instead, expect vast snowfields glistening in the bright sunshine – when it’s not snowing of course.

If it’s ski in ski out convenience you require then Val Thorens won’t disappoint. Lifts are located at different points throughout the village meaning that regardless of where your accommodation is you will be able to ski to a lift and in many cases ski back to your door at the end of the day. Val Thorens is also reputed to be a good place to bring kids.

Beginners will progress quickly with eight green pistes on which to master the basics. Progressing, they can begin to work their way through the twenty-five blue pistes above Val Thorens. With ideal conditions and a good instructor, beginners could even be making it down reds by the end of the week.

Les Trois Vallees has two hundred and fifty-four runs graded either red or blue and several fun parks ranging between the Belleville, Meribel and Courchevel valleys. If you want variety, you got it. If you want options, you’ve got them. If you want mileage, you’ve got more than you can possibly cover in a week – but, many of you will have an excellent time just trying.

Powder days in the Belleville valley are simply wonderful. Although there can be a lot of skiers and snowboarders competing for fresh tracks there is an awful lot of space. Sometimes a short hike will be all you need to ensure freshies. With so much choice your problem is deciding where to head first. We recommend using a guide to ensure being led to the very best stashes. Couloirs are in abundance throughout Les Trois Vallees and also in the Maurienne valley just over the hill from Val Thorens. If it’s this sort of thing your after you wont be disappointed. There’s also plenty of on-piste action to be had if that’s your forte.

Freestyle fiends will love Les Trois Vallees (Three Valleys) with almost more parks than piste. Not quite but there are a few, two of the best being the Moon and Plattieres parks in the Meribel valley. Pipes, kickers, rails and skier/boardercross courses are all on offer. Fill your boots.
