Lecht 2090 as it markets itself is Tomintouls’ small compact and relatively – by UK standards at least – snow sure ski area. Its situation in a high exposed valley just a few miles south of Tomintoul is its main advantage. The weather systems that predominate in this part of the North Eastern Cairngorms often take their influence from the Arctic and sub Arctic regions of Northern Europe. And sometimes that can mean lots of the white stuff.
The slopes at the Lecht are ideally suited to beginners and intermediates who will find the majority of terrain is spot on. There are also a couple of more challenging runs but nothing that will really test experts. The snowsport area is relatively small, even by Scottish standards with the biggest vertical descent being less than 500 feet. However, there are actually twenty marked pistes and a well maintained freestyle fun park conditions permitting.
With its proximity to the Cairngorm, Glenshee and Lecht ski areas and given the Lecht’s strong snow record, Tomintoul is a pretty good base for visitors on a Scottish ski campaign, as long as they don’t mind the forty or so minute drive to the former two resorts.
