Chamonix, Skiing & Snowbo...

Chamonix is most suitable for good intermediates and advanced riders that don’t mind jumping on a bus or into a car to get to the slopes. Spread out over four main areas linked by a free and efficient bus service, Chamonix’s main attraction is not the 150 kilometers of marked piste, but rather the considerably larger quantity of varied and testing off-piste terrain. A word of warning: this heavily glaciated area claims lives on a regular basis. The dangers are very real – as they are in all mountainous regions – but don’t be put off. If you want a taste of the outstanding back country then you should but you’d be crazy not to employ the services of a local guide.

Beginner

ski rating

Beginners will find suitable slopes at various locations throughout the valley. Le Tour with the greatest quantity of blue runs provides more scope for progressing beginners. An alternative for beginners with a car would be to head for Les Houches at the opposite end of the valley. Les Houches is reasonably close by and has more suitable terrain for beginners.

Intermediate

ski rating

The best areas for intermediates are Domaine de Balme at Le Tour and the Brevent-Flegere area above the hamlet of Le Praz and Chamonix town. With a guide, confident intermediates would easily negotiate the famous Vallee Blanche. This route is officially off-piste and for the most of it you are riding on a glacier so it is imperative that you hire a guide.
