Tomintoul, Cycling & Moun...

Whether your preference is for tarmac or mud track the countryside surrounding Tomintoul offers a good bit of pretty much everything. A good network of B class and other small roads, provide road cyclists with mile upon mile of pleasant riding without too much traffic. Mountain bikers and other off-road cyclists will find a plethora of forest and Landrover tracks and oodles of single track just waiting to be discovered. Check out Glen Livet and the Ladder Hills or trek up any one of the undiscovered tributaries in Glen Avon. On the door step and in neighbouring Royal Deeside there are one or two epic routes too. The unmarked route via Glen Builg, Braemar, Lairig An Laiogh and Glen Avon will test the fittest. The Speyside Way provides a bit of everything. While the 15km unmarked single track at Grantown will test your technical skills as well as your fitness. Also worth a look are the forest trails around Strathdon and those a bit further away around Ballater and Aboyne.

Recently Lecht 2090 opened up two downhill freeride trails sporting a good range of features between them. The Red Fox is tougher with bombholes, berms and bigger jumps demanding concentration and skill on landing while Blue Hare has been designed with newbies and big girl’s blouses like me in mind. The features are less terrifying and chicken runs are there for those that need them. There’s also a new skills park with various features on which punters can develop the various techniques required to cope with the on trail obstacles.
