Selva Val Gardena, Cycling &a...

This region of the Italian Dolomites has long been a favourite amongst road cyclists who have been enjoying the wonderful scenery and great cycling it has to offer for decades. They are drawn by relatively quiet roads with lots of ups, downs and high passes and the welcoming villages found en route. Today these same qualities are pulling in mountain bikers too. For them tours are of course more interesting and varied comprising of well groomed trails, rough rutted paths, Landrover style mountain tracks and in some cases metalled road too.

The famous Sella Ronda circuit originally the preserve of skiers and snowboarders is just one of those tours. It’s now open to mountain bikers who like their comrades in winter can travel in either direction around the Gruppo Del Sella Massif utilising the lift system for uphill sections. The circuit is about 26 kilometres in length and on average takes skiers and snowboarders between 3 ½ and 4 hours including lift time to complete. Could you beat that on a bike?

When we asked at the tourist office in Selva how many mountain bike trails there were, they replied, “A lot!” They weren’t kidding! There’s everything from steep strenuous ascents leading up over high passes to gently swooping trails rolling through sweet smelling alpine pastures. And wherever these trails lead the views are simply spectacular.
