Oban, Cycling & Mountain ...

Oban is a relatively quiet backwater when it comes to cycling – certainly as far as mountain biking is concerned. The reason for this is probably simple ignorance or it could just be that Fort William – of UCI mountain bike world cup fame – under an hours drive to the north grabs all the limelight. But to ignore Oban as a cycling destination is to miss the point entirely. In the forests and glens lying between Oban, Connel, Taynuilt, the western shore of Loch Awe, Kilmelford and Seil Island there is an intricate network of minor roads, forest tracks and cycle paths covering an area of such size that it would not be possible to explore it all in a week. It is an area of lochs both big and small, vast deciduous woodlands and commercial forest, working hill farms, quiet hamlets and rocky outcrops. It is the intrepid wanderer’s perfect playground.
