Glencoe, Cycling & Mounta...

Bizarrely enough Glencoe is not an ideal mountain biking destination in itself. That’s not to say it’s completely devoid of mountain biking routes though. In fact there’s a real classic to be ridden from here. But barring that the options are limited as the steep rocky mountains are really more suited to climbers and walkers. However, if you have a car your options increase dramatically as within a 30 minute driving radius several other cross-country classics become accessible. Also falling within this range is the world cup downhill course on Aonach Mor at Nevis Range, Fort William.

The local classic follows the old road from the Clachaig Inn eastwards up through Glen Coe. It then ascends the Devil’s Staircase, a punishing climb that makes up a short section of Scotland’s famous long distance walking trail the West Highland Way. A rapid descent to Kinlochleven is followed by an easy lochside amble back to Glencoe village. In total the route that takes its name from the Devil’s Staircase section is 33km with 1200m of ascent. It’s well worth the effort though.
