Alpe d'Huez, Climbing

Much of the charted climbs at Alpe d’Huez are found on the rock faces above Lac Besson. The resort claims to have over 150 known routes and provide a list with details and a map of 78 of those routes. Grades range from 3a to 7a in the French grading system with the shortest being about 30m and the longest nearer 120m in height. Most of these routes are bolted but some of the pitons may have been in situ for a decade or more so be careful which ones you use.

Located in the Gorges de Sarenne, Alpe d’Huez also has a couple of via ferrata routes. One is suitable for first timers and the other those with at least some experience. Both roughly ascend 200m and take about 2 hours to complete. Ideal for either the morning or afternoon shift!
