Alagna Valsesia is one of those special ski and snowboard resorts that remain the preserve of serious sportsmen and sportswomen. The resort maintains a traditional appeal much like Gressoney one valley away. Fortunately the mass commercialisation that infects the majority of European resorts hasn’t spread this far yet. Alagna is not really a family resort unless you’re a family of top athletes that is. There is nothing really here for beginners. The only pisted run leading back to town is red, all other routes being off-piste.

GETTING HERE

Beginner Alagna is definitely not a beginners resort although there is a small beginner’s tow just beyond the village in the small hamlet of Wold. For those willing to try learning here the professional ski school will gladly accommodate you.
Intermediate Although Alagna has been labelled a freeride resort, intermediates should consider it as potential base for exploring the Monterosa Ski region. It is well linked via modern lift system and interconnecting pistes to Gressoney and Champoluc. The majority of suitable intermediate terrain is found in either the Gressoney or Champoluc valleys. However the return run to Alagna from Passo Salati is one of the longest and most exciting red runs in the area.
Advanced The possibilities for off-piste skiing here are unlimited and vastly undiscovered. With two thousand meters of vertical descent from the Punta Indren you are spoiled for choice. Steep couloirs or open fields of untracked powder are guaranteed to fatigue even the strongest of legs. Hidden itineraries holding excellent snow even days after the last snow fall are waiting to be discovered.
Touring The Monterosa region is one of the best ski and snowboard touring destinations in the world. The vast Monterosa massif lends itself to some really epic tours. Tours that pass over 4000 metre peaks before dropping down to far off settlements in foreign lands. If that sounds like too much hard work then you can always hitch a lift to the top in a helicopter before dropping down again under your own steam.
