Wengen, Switzerland

Wengen, a small unspoiled Swiss village located on a sunny terrace high above the Lauterbrunnen valley is surrounded by some of Switzerland’s most spectacular mountain scenery. Two famous mountains the Jungfrau and the Eiger dominate the skyline and define the boundary between the Bernese Oberland and Valais cantons of Switzerland.

Like its close neighbours Grindelwald and Murren, Wengen is completely car free being accessed by mountain rail from Lauterbrunnen. Although it’s probably most famous for skiing these days due its presence as a fixture on the alpine skiing world cup circuit, Wengen and this particular part of the Bernese Oberland was originally a summer destination for tourists. Mountains like the Eiger in particular have drawn alpinists and climbers from all over the globe to the region for more than a century while the lake-lands of nearby Interlaken prove equally alluring to outdoor adventurers. With Lake Thun to its west and Lake Brienz to its east Interlaken is an ideal spot for various water sports from spring through to autumn while the shores of these large bodies of water provide many a pleasant walking or cycling route suitable for most families.

Although small, Wengen has a good selection of bars and restaurants and can prove fairly lively of an evening. It should be noted that Wengen has a reputation for being a particularly friendly and hospitable place. This only compliments its sophistication and natural charm. The accommodation offered is of a good standard across the board and includes two, three and four star hotels, apartments and chalets plus a YMCA hostel boasting great views of the Jungfrau.
