Vassiliki, Greece

Vassiliki a one-time fishing and farming village earns the bulk of its crust these days from adrenaline soaked surfers, windsurfers that is. The village that’s popular with sailors and windsurfers has retained its small village atmosphere and fortunately has managed to avoid the lure of mass tourism thus far. This is probably because Eric – a Thermal Katabatic wind that blows up daily – keeps the hoards away. Hurrah for Eric!

Vassiliki is a long narrow village stretching round the bay. At one end lies the old harbour and most of the shops, bars and restaurants. At the other there is a small hamlet consisting of private villas, a few small hotels and one or two good restaurants. In between, a road runs along behind beach clubs and hotels – run almost exclusively by watersports holiday companies – and apart from a couple of villas on the inland side there is just plantation.

Most popular for its wind based activities, Vass also offers a bit of diving, sea kayaking, hiking and mountain biking. And not far from the resort there are some more tranquil waterside settings, just in case you’ve had enough of the force 4 to 6 tempest. Not likely!
