Valtournenche, Italy

The traditional farming village of Valtournenche is located a short distance down the valley from its better known neighbour Cervinia. More attractive than Cervinia, Valtournenche retains alpine charm and character while giving access to the same marvellous mountains. It is however much quieter and offers less in the way of accommodation and nightlife. Not a bad thing if it’s peace and quiet that you seek.

The familiar bulk of Il Cervino, probably the world’s most photographed mountain towers above Valtournenche reaching an altitude of 4478 metres. If you’re wondering why you’ve never heard of Il Cervino that’s probably because it’s more commonly referred to by its’ German name, Matterhorn. Distinctly different from this side than the view presented in most photographs, it is nevertheless still an impressive sight.

Il Cervino is not the only famous peak rising above Valtournenche though. The mighty Monte Rosa also rises nearby providing much of the focus for summer and winter sport. The Matterhorn is a climbers’ domain while the Monte Rosa is accessible to hikers and skiers being particularly popular amongst ski mountaineers and heli-skiers alike.

Not everything happens way up on high as horse riding, cycling and rafting are offered in the valley and Valtournenche boasts a sports centre with great facilities including swimming pool, gymnasium, sports courts and a sauna to help relax those tired muscles.
