Valmorel, France

Valmorel is an attractive Tarentaise village situated at the head of the Morel valley about 25 minutes drive from the train station at Moutiers. Originally designed as a ski resort, the village was built as recently as 1976. Today, it opens its doors to summer travelers wishing to take a stroll through the scenic countryside both here and in the neighbouring Maurienne valley. The traffic free village is a popular favourite amongst families and has been cited as such by some prominent guide books and certain tour companies that operate here also describe Valmorel as “family friendly” in their brochures.

Currently Valmorel’s mountain sports digest includes mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, paragliding, white water rafting, canyoning, climbing and via ferrata in summer and of course skiing and snowboarding in winter. And for those looking to do very little, Valmorel also sports a couple of Spas.

The choice of accommodation is relatively limited though, so to be sure of securing a room it is imperative to book early. What does exist comes in the form of a couple of comfortable hotels, chalets and gites plus several apartments. For wining and dining there is a sufficient selection of restaurants and one or two cosy bars with open fireplaces. And for those who like to boogie woogie, there’s even a discotheque. Groovy!
