Tignes, France

Located in the Haute Tarantaise in the Savoie Alps, Tignes is one of the highest mountain resorts in France. With an impressive portfolio of sport to offer Tignes is truly a year round destination. One of the few places in the world that can boast year round snow sport, it also offers water sports on its lake as well as all the other stuff one would expect to find in a first class mountain resort – mountain biking, hiking, climbing, paragliding and so on.

The architecture in Tignes has been criticised in the past for being aesthetically poor, but the resort is trying to change this image and has spent considerable sums of money giving itself a facelift in recent years. The mountain scenery will not disappoint however. Impressive mountain peaks are interspersed by severe arêtes and vast glaciers that plunge precipitously over dramatic cliffs towering above verdant alpine pastures that in winter are covered in a thick blanket of snow. A host of wildlife can be spotted here too. Chamois, marmot and golden eagle are common sights.

Made up of several hamlets Tignes is well spread out, however this does not mean that you are ever far away from access to the mountains as lifts are located throughout the resort. There is an abundance of accommodation, restaurants and bars to choose from in each hamlet. Harri’s bar in Le Lavachet is particularly popular with Brits and at certain times of the year is over run by ski instructors. BASI (British Association of Snowsports Instructors) run several end of season courses in Tignes due to the likelihood that the ski slopes still have good snow cover.
