The Gasteinertal, Austria

Whether you like your water hot or cold this part of the Hohe Tauern national park has it all. There are serene mountain lakes in summer and snow covered slopes in winter but all year round thermal spring water bubbles up from below to provide local hotel spa’s with a free supply of the hot stuff. Two of the four settlements within the Gastein valley; Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein market themselves as spa towns. Sportgastein is a ski station that was built around an old gold-mining village and Dorfgastein is a traditional farming village located at the foot of the valley.

The area attracts a cosmopolitan crowd throughout the year. Some come simply to relax while others come to indulge in the plethora of outdoor pursuits on offer. The valley is ideal for those who want to find a balance between action and relaxation.

Dorfgastein, Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein all provide tourist accommodation with the latter two offering the greatest choice. Each has a reasonable selection of bars and restaurants although again the latter two offer a wider selection.
