Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Set at the foot of Switzerland’s highest mountains the traditional farming village of Saas Fee enjoys a well deserved reputation as a world class year round resort. Above the village the turquoise walls of the Fee glacier known as “the Pearl of the Alps” overlook the snow and ice fields of the lower Allalin Mountain. It is up here at an altitude of 3500 meters (11483 feet) that one will find the world’s highest rotating restaurant where the 360 º view can be digested along with lunch.

The village of Saas Fee is closed to traffic with the exception of the electric taxis and hotel pick ups that buzz up and down the narrow streets. Strolling through the streets between November and May you often get a waft of animal smell coming from one of the chalets where livestock are housed in their winter steadings.

It’s possible to bump into an international ski racer or pro snowboarder during the summer months in Saas Fee as national ski and snowboard teams come here to train on the Fee glacier. Saas Fee is an ideal place for those who want to improve their fitness or simply want to relax and enjoy the clear mountain air; you can ski and snowboard year round, play golf, hike, bike, climb or chill at your will.

There’s a wide range of accommodation to choose from including two, three, four and five star hotels, guesthouses, chalets and apartments. To eat out the choice is also good with everything from burgers to a la carte being served. And there are plenty of bars in which to wash down a meal and a disco for working it off later on.

Saas Fee proves a suitable destination for weekenders and short stays for international travellers with access to flights to Sion airport that is only about an hour away.
