Ortisei, Italy

Ortisei or St Ulrich as it also know is an old market village set in a picturesque valley within the Sud (South) Tirol region of the Italian Dolomites. A place with far reaching history Ortisei is a village of polyglots. The original tongue spoken here is ‘Ladin’ an old romance language which is still widely used today. Locals also speak a dialect of German as well as Italian although Italian as one might think is not usually their first language.

The village built at the confluence of two rivers is surrounded by steep slopes clad in pine forest. Above the forest some of the world’s most impressive mountains rise precipitously from alpine meadows. These gargantuan lumps of rock are the remains of an ancient reef system born of prehistoric seas. Like corals on some of today’s tropical reefs the limestone cliffs of these Dolomites are resplendent with colour throughout the day. At sunset they have a tendency to shine pink in the fading light while at other times they can appear positively red. Some might say the scenery is spectacular while others will say it is simply magical.

The resort offers a good choice of accommodation and boasts a reasonable selection of restaurants and bars for wining and dining of an evening.
