Murren , Switzerland

Mürren is a marvellous mountain village, perched on a high sunny terrace that looks out across the Lauterbrunnen valley to three famous mountains, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Free of cars and rich in tradition it dates from the thirteenth century and claims to be the highest ski resort in the Bernese Oberland. The village nestles at the foot of the Schilthorn with its revolving Piz Gloria Restaurant that was immortalized when it was used as a location in the James Bond film on Her Majesty’s Secret Service starring George Lazenby.

Between the wild summits of the Jungfrau Mountains and the calm waters of Interlaken’s lakes there are some incredible landscapes providing the perfect environment for everything from base jumping and bouldering to sailing and skiing. And all of it within easy reach for anyone based in Mürren.

Mürren can offer visitors a handful of hotels, guesthouses and apartments in which to rest their weary head of a night. Much of the nightlife is centred in hotels as is dining and although Mürren is relatively small it can produce quite an atmosphere at busy times of the year.

Getting here is a cinch too with easy access by road to at least as far as Lauterbrunnen in the valley below – Mürren being traffic free – or by rail to Interlaken from where a local train taking twenty minutes finishes the journey. The city of Berne with international air and rail links is just over an hour away.
