Morzine , France

Situated on the Proadains valley floor close to the border with Switzerland, the historic town of Morzine bristles with alpine character and charm. The picturesque settlement has prospered from slate mining which prevails to this day, with five mines still operational. However, Morzine – I’d wager – generates most of its wealth these days from the tourist trade. Particularly the kind of tourism that involves hoofing uphill or charging downhill.

Visitors flock here in summer and winter as Morzine has much to offer the active traveler. Golf, tennis and a plethora of mountain activities are all available in summer. The mountain biking and hiking trails are extensive in range and there is a load to do for climbers and mountaineers too. And believe it or not, scuba diving is also a pursuit practiced here. In winter, the staple attractions are skiing and snowboarding with Morzine being centrally situated within the massive Portes du Soleil ski area.

Morzine is a true year round destination with a real heart and soul, only found in resorts’ with a proper community. As such Morzine is alive after dark in summer as well as in winter. It offers a wide selection of accommodation including chalets, hotels and apartments plus several good restaurants for dining out of an evening. In terms of bars there’s everything from quiet to lively and for those that never sleep a couple of nightclubs too.
