Les Arcs , France

Incorporating four purpose built ski villages, the town of Bourg St Maurice and the traditional mountain villages of Villaroger, Vallandry and Plan Peisey, Les Arcs is located in the Tarantaise valley toward the northern end of Le Vanoise National Park.

Being part of national park hasn’t particularly benefited the architecture in three of the purpose built ski resorts although the latest development Arc 1950, has proven more sympathetic to the local savoyard vernacular.

Large sections of the mountains have been designated nature reserves thus limiting the activities that can be undertaken in those sections and therefore helping preserve the local wildlife for all to enjoy. This does not mean that mountain activities are limited. On the contrary, there is still plenty of room to play.

In terms of culture and heritage Bourg St Maurice has the most to offer with its history reaching back centuries possibly even to Roman times. Many hamlets in the area date from medieval times too.

Each village offers something in the way of nightlife with Arc 1800 said to be the liveliest. Arc 1800 also has the largest selection of restaurants not counting Bourg St Maurice.
