Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

The quiet village of Lauterbrunnen nestles in a steep sided glaciated valley between the ski resorts of Wengen and Murren. The area, part of a UNESCO world heritage site abounds with wildlife and inspiring natural features. It is a land of waterfalls, rock walls, high peaks, alpine forests, meadows and gorges. The glaciers that once sculpted the landscape have all but disappeared and all that remains are a few fingers of ice that cling on in a few high valleys far above in the Jungfrau Mountains. It is an idyll well worth preserving.

Lauterbrunnen is popular with outdoor enthusiasts who value a bit of peace and quiet at the end of a hard days hoofing. It is quintessentially the perfect location for kicking back and chilling, especially after having been at it at full tilt all day long.

Quiet Lauterbrunnen certainly is with but a handful of hotels to choose from. The highest rating of which is three stars. In terms of self catering accommodation however, there is greater choice between three and four star apartments plus there are a couple of campsites and a few hostels. Most of the nightlife and dining takes place in and around the hotels whose doors are generally open to all and sundry.

From the city of Berne Lauterbrunnen can be accessed in about an hour making it a suitable destination for weekend international visitors who need to fly. It’s easily reached by road and is also plugged into Switzerland’s wonderful rail network via Interlaken which essentially taps into the rest of Europe and has direct links to several major cities or connections through some to others.
