Engelberg, Switzerland

Engelberg is a small traditional Swiss mountain resort nestling at the foot of the giant, Mount Titlis. Standing atop this monster you might have been scared t..less if the dramatic scenery hadn’t taken your breath away.

Outdoor fans will find there is plenty to amuse them here. First there is a revolving cable car which is something of a novelty. Then of course there is; a heavily crevassed glacier, steep mountain slopes and craggy cliffs, gentle alpine pastures and calming coniferous forest. Oh yes, and an abundance of wild and wonderful animals. I don’t mean mountain-bikers.

Engelberg was originally formed around a Benedictine Monastery and its name, legend claims was given to it by “the singing voice of angels”. After a few in one of the local hostelries you may fancy yourself as a bit of an angel too.

The village offers a good choice of bars and restaurants including an igloo bar with some interesting features. There is also a swimming pool and sports centre with an ice rink, climbing wall and several racket sports courts. Handy if your little ones still need to be entertained of an evening.
