Braemar, Scotland

Slap bang in the middle of the Cairngorms National Park sandwiched between the northern and southern Cairngorm ranges, the historic village of Braemar claims number one in the outdoor activity location, location, location game. Even the Queen has a pad here ā€“ Balmoral Castle. Her Royal Highness, usually in residence during the summer months is known to attend church in Braemar itself and is often seen at the Braemar Gathering, a local highland games event, held in September.

Iā€™m not so sure Her Majesty is too hot on Scottish skiing or mountain biking, but at least she can appreciate the sheer beauty of this area while out on a stroll with her dogs. In terms of outdoor pursuits Braemar can virtually offer it all and right throughout the year. In winter there is the skiing and snowboarding at Glenshee and the Lecht. There is also ice climbing and winter mountaineering including ski mountaineering ā€“ but remember to wrap up warm, these parts experience arctic conditions. And in the summer months hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, road cycling and canoeing are all on the agenda.

The attractive village offers plenty of choice in the way of accommodation and has a decent selection of restaurants too. Visitors should find something to match both taste and budget.
