Avoriaz, France

Perched high on a cliff between the Swiss border and the neighbouring village of Morzine this purpose built ski resort is at the centre of the vast Portes du Soleil mountain domain. A cluster of cedar clad apartment blocks built in the 1960’s, traffic free Avoriaz is a fairly unusual looking place. Like the many other purpose built ski resorts in France, Avoriaz is trying to improve its looks. Something I’m sure many of us wish we could do.

At 1800 metres Avoriaz is the highest resort in the region and therefore the most reliable for snow cover during winter. However, Avoriaz is no longer just a ski destination and now markets itself as a summertime alternative too.

Its’ lively atmosphere experienced during winter is not guaranteed in summer, so if you are looking for somewhere quieter and don’t mind the lack of alpine charm then Avoriaz could be right up your street.
