Arosa, Switzerland

The idyllic village of Arosa in Graubünden typifies the Swiss mountain resorts of today. Rolling alpine meadows are dotted with tumbledown wooden chalets with flowers growing in window boxes. Scattered around the chalets lie neatly cut bales of hay that are gnawed at by the occasional wandering bovine. Up market hotels nestle within the protection of the mountain forests and shimmering lakes play host to an impressive array of wildlife. Life is but a dream.

Rocky peaks, flower strewn meadows and thick forest surround this mountain idyll providing the perfect playground for many an outdoor enthusiast. There is golf for girls, the old and infirm and bikes, boots and rocky chutes for the boys. Seriously though there’s a stack of stuff for all to do in both summer and winter.

Arosa can be accessed by train and is roughly two hours or so by road from Friedrichshafen airport in Germany and a similar time by road from Zurich. In terms of accommodation it offers everything from superior hotels and luxury chalets to comfortable hostels and campsites. And when it comes to dining the list of options is impressively extensive.
