Scotland, Windsurfing & Kitesur..

Between it’s coastline that stretches for thousands of miles and its many islands along the west coast it’s not difficult to see why Scotland is home to world class kitesurfing and windsurfing venues. The Isle of Tiree on Scotland’s west coast is without a doubt it’s most famous windsurfing asset benefiting as it does from prevailing south westerly winds blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. Tiree is an all round watersports venue offering surfing and kitesurfing too. And it is one of the few places in Scotland where you can hire windsurfing or kitesurfing kit and get lessons from a qualified RYA or IKO instructor.

Elie on the east coast north of Edinburgh also hires out windsurfing kit while at Aviemore, two centres based on inland lochs both offer instruction and equipment hire. It’s also possible to get windsurfing lessons on Loch Ard near Aberfoyle and in Irvine on the west coast just south of Glasgow you can buy kitesurfing lessons and hire kit.

But while these facilities are great assets to have, none of the inland locations can match Tiree on wind reliability. Therefore Tiree is currently the only destination we can recommend as suitable for a solely windsurfing or kitesurfing holiday in Scotland. Of course Aviemore and Aberfoyle come up trumps as hiking and biking trip destinations so if you weren’t sure about going all out for a windsurfing or kitesurfing holiday then they’d be good places to try out knowing you could fall back on the other pursuits.
