Spain, Walking & Hiking

Between its numerous islands and vast mainland Spain offers an incredible range of walking holiday options. The Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges on the Iberian Peninsula along with the volcanic Canary Islands in the Atlantic offer walking adventures at the highest altitudes. While the rugged limestone peaks of Mallorca and verdant slopes of Asturias and Cantabria along with the extensive coastlines of Catalonia and Andalucía offer equally enticing hiking trails albeit at lower levels.

One way to discover the diverse range of walking Spain has to offer is to undertake one of the Gran Recorrido (GR) long distance walking paths. If it took your fancy you could literally start walking somewhere around Gibraltar and not stop until you reached The Netherland’s North Sea coast. The GR routes form part of a wider network of European walking paths also found in Portugal, France, Belgium and The Netherlands.

Another point to note when considering a venue for your next walking holiday is the fact that certain regions of Spain benefit from a relatively benign climate. Although weather in the mountains can never be underestimated, Spain’s peaks are far less susceptible to the summer thunder storms that can be common in some of Central Europe’s alpine resorts.
