Austria, Skiing & Snowboarding

It’s hard to find a village in the Austrian Alps that doesn’t have its own ski tow. For many it literally is just one rickety old tow while others have highly integrated lift systems capable of shuttling thousands of skiers and snowboarders up the mountain each hour. These systems give access to some truly world beating skiing in magnificent surroundings while the resorts that serve them offer visitors a generous portion of alpine charm.

Austria’s main ski resorts have developed on the back of old farming communities that are still the bedrock of some settlements today. And it’s this history which gives Austrian ski resorts their unique character.

Skiing is the national sport in Austria and as New Zealand dominates world rugby, its’ racers dominate the rankings of international ski racing. This is hardly surprising given that the vast bulk of the country is covered by snow capped mountains.
