Spain, Cycling & Mountain Biking

Spain has a long tradition as a destination for cyclists with Mallorca and Catalunya proving particularly popular spots for tourers. And more recently mountain bikers have been discovering some of the country’s cache of mountain bike trails and realising to their pleasure that Spain is a proverbial goldmine. Each of Spain’s regions is crisscrossed by an array of traditional single track trails and land rover style mountain tracks virtually all accessible to wandering adventurers.

Ancient cobbled footpaths that once paved the way for pilgrims now provide mountain bikers with lung bursting ascents and bone jangling descents. Spectacular scenery is often coupled with precipitous drops into the yawning chasms of deep gorges above which cyclists dare to navigate along narrow paths on their trusty two wheeled steeds.

One of Spain’s advantages for cyclists of all pedigrees is that it is truly year round destination with only some of the higher parts of the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada experiencing heavy snow falls in winter. The flip side of this is that it can also get very hot in August making the going extremely tough. At least in summer you can pull up and sit in the shade of a trail side tree and sup some water to cool down.
