France, Cycling & Mountain Biking

Not far from the torturous ascents of the Tour de France cyclists can find a much more relaxed way to travel on two wheels. Much of the relatively low lying countryside of France is a rich tapestry of quiet lanes and dedicated cycle paths running between historic towns and villages through a patchwork of fields, vineyards, orchards and woodlands and occasionally along the course of a gently flowing river or canal towpath. This is an ideal environment for easy cycle touring some of which is even suitable for young families.

In the more mountainous regions of France, particularly the Alps and Pyrenees and on the relatively hilly island of Corsica, cycle touring is also popular but certainly more demanding than in the Loire or Dordogne. These regions are also host to some of Europe’s best up and coming mountain biking destinations with many of France’s popular ski resorts now developing mountain bike trails and adapting lifts to carry bikes. Alpe d’Huez, The Three Valleys and Portes du Soleil to name but a few are certainly worth considering if you fancy a weekend or even a week long mountain biking holiday.
