Snow biking - an "exhilarating" alternative

Winter sports enthusiasts who are looking for an exciting alternative to snowboarding and skiing are in luck.

Resorts in Banff and Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies are still in peak season and are offering snow fans the chance to try ice hiking, dog sledding and snow biking.

Snow biking, in particular, is proving to be a big hit in the Rockies, where a bike and all the equipment can be rented for under £30 a day.

Those who have mastered snowboarding and skiing and are searching for the next adrenalin rush should definitely give snow biking a try, says a travel writer for ABC News.

"It's daring but the beauty is, even if you're not the most coordinated person in the world, no problem; you can easily scoot down the hill at your own pace," writes Karen Schaler.

"Once you figure out the balance issue, snow biking can be exhilarating. On the flip side, daredevils and BMX masters will be satisfied with snow biking's endless possibilities."

The Canadian Rockies was named as a World Heritage Site in 1984. Its highest point is Mount Robson, which rises to a height of almost 4,000 metres.
