Finland's Virpi Kuitunen has claimed victory on the one kilometre sprint outside the Swedish Royal Palace, her third World Cup win this season.

She was 0.9 seconds ahead of Slovenia's Petra Majdic, who happened to be last year's winner. In third place was Japan's Natsumi Madoka.

Kuitunen now leads the overall World Cup ranking with 1,101 points, ahead of Norway's Astrid Jacobsen, who has 1,015 points.

On the men's side, Norway's Jens Arne Svartedal took gold and was a mere 0.2 seconds ahead of team mate Boerre Naess. Emil Joensson rounded out the podium for Sweden.

The Czech Republic's Lukas Bauer leads the overall World Cup rankings by over 400 points despite not entering the race.

The events were watched by the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf. The king met his wife Silvia Sommerlath, the Brazilian daughter of a German businessman, at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
